We handle the full range of bathroom plumbing work, and showers take up a fair share of it.

Shower Faults That Need a Plumber

Most shower call-outs come down to three faults: dripping, cold or lukewarm water, and weak or uneven flow.

  1. A drip with the water off

The mixer is usually at fault rather than the head. A failed washer or cartridge inside it seeps past its seal and out through the head.

  2. Cold or lukewarm water

A cartridge past its best can over-dilute the hot with cold. When no hot tap anywhere in the house runs warm, look to the water heater instead.

  3. Weak or uneven flow

Scale across the spray holes, the flow limiter built into the head or a tired cartridge can each thin the spray. Low flow from every outlet in the house is a different problem on the supply side.

One more sign: water seeping where the head joins the arm means the joint has worked loose or its seal has perished, and it appears only during use.

Where a Shower Head Swap Ends and Plumbing Begins

Yes, any householder can change a shower head in Queensland, but the arm, mixer and cartridge belong to a licensee.

The QBCC classes a head swap as unregulated, though the result still has to comply with the standards. Past the head, the work is licensed territory:

  1. The arm, wall mixer and cartridge

fixes, swaps and removals of fittings count as minor work, done by a licensed plumber without a council permit or a Form 4.

  2. An extra outlet, or a shower moved

notifiable work in an existing building. No permit applies, and a Form 4 reaches the QBCC inside 10 business days of completion. We lodge it, pay the lodgement fee and can on-charge that cost to you.

From the Shower Head Back to the Wall

Working back from the spray end, the parts line up as the head, the arm or rail, the hose and the mixer.

  1. Shower head

the spray end, and the one part you can replace yourself.

  2. Shower arm

the pipe that reaches from the wall out to a fixed head.

  3. Rail

holds a handheld set, with its hose supplied from the outlet in the wall.

  4. Mixer cartridge

sets both the flow and the blend of hot and cold. A worn one announces itself as a drip, a stiff handle or water at the wrong heat, and we match the replacement to the mixer.

  5. Diverter

where bath and shower share one wall point, a worn diverter sends water to the wrong outlet, so the spout runs while you shower.

Exposed parts like the arm and rail sit within reach. A mixer set into the wall means getting at it through the tiling, which we explain before starting.

What a New Shower Set Needs to Meet

Replace the fitting once no washer or cartridge swap will revive it, or when an outlet is added or shifted. Repair wins while the fault sits in one serviceable part.

Any new shower fitting carries two marks before we can install it:

  1. WaterMark certification

the product standard a licensed plumber can legally install against.

  2. Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) registration

the star rating on the box. New homes require showerheads of at least 3 stars, though renovations are exempt.

If a whole new set is on the cards, our vanity and basin installation page covers the room's other fittings.

Old Mixers and Bayside Air

Sandgate's bathrooms age in place. Area-level approvals recorded just 15 new dwellings in 2021-22, so the showers we open belong largely to the suburb's earlier building waves, weatherboard villas near the Sandgate Library included.

Two patterns follow from that. The census put the median age here at 49, and households that have kept one bathroom for years tend to call when the mixer finally stiffens or weeps. And the onshore air off Bramble Bay pits chrome in the foreshore streets, so a rail or arm near the water ages faster than the same part would inland.

A full refit is a bigger project, and our bathroom renovation plumbing page walks through it end to end.

Shower Repair Questions Answered

Call (07) 3523 7172

Can a plumber fix my shower in Sandgate?

Yes, for every fitting: head, arm, rail, hose, mixer and cartridge. Water getting out of the recess and into floors or walls is a different job, which our leaking showers page covers. Book a visit and the fix gets quoted before any work begins.

Why does my shower head drip when the water is turned off?

The mixer is the usual culprit when a drip persists after everything is shut off. Inside it, the washer or cartridge has worn thin and lets water creep past the seal. A short dribble straight after use is just leftover water draining, and nothing to worry about.

What causes low shower pressure in Sandgate?

On the fitting side, limescale clogging the spray nozzles, a flow limiter inside the head or an ageing cartridge can each weaken the stream. If every tap in the home runs slow too, the fault sits with the supply pipes, and we trace that separately on site.

How many litres per minute can a rental showerhead use?

No more than 9 litres a minute at most. A Queensland landlord can only bill a tenant for the whole water usage where the showerheads run efficiently, and the Residential Tenancies Authority recommends at least 3 stars on fixtures made from 2005 on.

When should I replace a shower instead of repairing it?

Replace once no washer or cartridge swap will revive the fitting, or when you want an extra outlet or the shower moved. Adding or relocating an outlet is notifiable work, and we lodge the Form 4 with the QBCC after finishing.
